You can obtain a heavy vehicle licence in two ways:
The RTA test is taken with an RTA employee assessor who will determine your ability to drive the class of truck that you are applying for. This is a pass or fail situation on the day.
Competency Based Training & Assessment is taken with a licensed driving instructor who is also an RTA accredited assessor.
The RTA and HVCBA systems must be conducted in loaded vehicles. These conditions apply to all Heavy Vehicle classes (LR to MC).
You can be tested by the R&MS or assessed by an accredited assessor in your own heavy vehicle if you have one. The vehicle must be roadworthy and registered and must have a lap sash seatbelt on the passenger side. Furthermore it should be loaded to 75% of the vehicle GVM to comply with current regulations. It should also be for the class of licence for which you are applying.
